Private school burns down

Several fire crews were called to a blaze on McMurchy Avenue late Friday afternoon. Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen kilometres from the fire raging just south of Queen Street across from the old Brampton fairgrounds. The building, at 57 McMurchy Ave. S., is occupied by Peel Adventist Elementary School. According to initial reports, the fire suppression efforts were being concentrated on the building's roof area. Fire department personnel were alerted just after 4:30 p.m. and were still on scene after 6 p.m. dousing and inspecting the site. No one was believed to be in the building at the time. At press time there was no damage estimate available.

Region’s waste guru moving on
- The Brampton Guardian
Sunday July 6 2008
BRAMPTON - Peel Region councillors took time out of Thursday's council meeting to bid a fond farewell to senior staff member Andy Pollock, who has decided to step down from his post as Peel's director of waste management.
Pollock has served as the region's director of waste management for more than seven years.
His next stop is Niagara Region where he will take on a similar role as director of waste. Pollock will formally leave his position sometime in August.
"I wanted to just publicly acknowledge his seven years of service for the Region of Peel," said Mitch Zamojc, Peel's commissioner of planning. "I personally want to thank him for his dedication, passion and hard work. He has taken us a long way in seven years with his knowledge and expertise. I've learned a lot about the waste business because of Andy....

City unveils modern transit facility
By Lori Sherman, Staff Writer - The Brampton Guardian
Sunday July 6 2008
BRAMPTON - Brampton Transit recently unveiled an extensive new state-of-the-art facility at Sandalwood Parkway that is aiming to ease some of the demands of the city’s growing population.
The building, which spans 285,000 sq. ft. and cost $40 million to construct, was funded by the Gas Tax Fund— a federal initiative that finances municipalities growing infrastructure needs.
Peter Alder, senior manager of operations for the Sandalwood facility, said the original transit division located at Clark Boulevard was exceeding maximum capacity.
“It was like a shoe box just bursting at the seams. It’s located on the southeast corner of the city and that facility could not acquire any more land. Plus it made sense to have something balancing it off by creating something in the northwest corner.”
This facility features an expanded...
